Kris Mole, who is traveling Europe completely broke to raise awareness and money for breast cancer, started what he calls, “The Great Euro Freebie Challenge” on November 1st. To date he has raised 83% of his ₤1500 goal. Kris started this trip without, he says, a cent in his pocket and has depended on the kindness of strangers to make his way from EU capital to capital. The point of his challenge is to reach every EU Capital (there’s 27), raise at least ₤1500 for breast cancer research in the name of his late aunt Susan Proto, and raise overall awareness for his cause.
To date, Feb 15, 2008, Kris has achieved the following:
- 17 EU Capitals, 10 to go
- Traveled over 5,000 miles (8,000 km) for free
- Traveled for 107 days
- Lost 20 + pounds
- Raised ₤1200 for cancer research
To put Kris’s 107 days traveled for free into context, think about how much that would cost, which is a testament to Kris’s determinism to accomplish his mission and how friendly people can be. As a general rule a backpacker can expect to spend about €60 per day- not including travel- which equals €6420 of kindness that people have given him. Remember, he started out without a penny.
Now 107 days into his challenge Kris is 83% to his fund raising goal, however, he writes, that donations have slowed. This is a good cause and Kris has showed that he is determined to achieve his goal in memory of his late aunt. If you want to donate, it is easy and secure.
You can follow Kris’s travels on his blog The Great Euro Freebie Challenge. Currently he is in Lisbon waiting to hear from EasyJet to see if he can get a ticket to Paris.
Kris, iKangaroo wishes you the best of luck with EasyJet and we are looking forward to hearing more about your adventures.
Truly, Happy Travels!
