What we do-
iKangaroo blends experienced traveler recommendations with digital maps and multimedia to deliver concise information to save travelers time and money while maintaining an independent travel experience.
Who we are-
Those that live and work on the front line of the budget travel experience, including tour guides, hostel and hotel workers, among others. As a general rule we are not travel writers but more like travel advisers. What’s the difference? While we may not write in flowery pithy language, we know the places and activities that will please you (i.e. substance over style). We are out talking to travelers every day and we know the issues, trends, and we truly want to provide the best travel experience possible by delivering fresh and relevant knowledge in as many media as are available to us including pod and videocasts, articles, videos and our digital maps.
About the founder-
My name is Chris Carriero and I am the editor and creator of iKangaroo- Digital Travel Guide.
What makes me an expert on budget travel is that over a decade ago I took a leave of absence from my job and traveled throughout Europe and the Middle East with about $1,200. To support myself I did odd jobs that made me enough money through Greece, Israel, Italy, Germany and Portugal. By scrimping and saving my original $1,200 I enjoyed two fantastic and educational years when I saw things that I never imagined and made friends with people from all over the world. In 1997 I arrived in Rome with my last $200 where I met an Italian hotelier who became my business partner in a small tour start-up founded to serve the independent budget traveler. That lasted until 2005 when I sold what had become, and remains, a rather large tour company (between 1997 and 2005 we showed more than 70,000 people around Rome; now that number is closer to 100,000). Most recently I helped Musiker Tours start study abroad programs in Spain and Italy. After selling the tour company and returning to the States for grad school I have now settled in Paris, France where my goal is to build iKangaroo into a reliable and trusted tool that gets you the most for your time and money.
